On December 1, 2004
Fire Fighter Terry Short was teaching a Introduction to Fire Fighting class in
Cuba. Mr. Short stated in the class that we would be having a live burn
one of these days and the information he had been teaching them would start to
come together. On the morning of December 2, 2004, the next day,
the Cuba Fire Department was called for a mobile home fire in Cuba.
Members Terry and Summer Short were on scene of a fully involved structure
fire, IT WAS THEIR HOME. Needless to say the structure was a total
lose. He was able to salvage some personal items but not many. One
of Mr. Short favorite belongings was a poster of the movie "Back
Draft", and it was totally destroyed. Assistant Chief Crystal Ingram
found out and decided to make some calls. She was able to get Kurt
Russell to sign another poster and it was shipped to Assistant Chief
Ingram. Another member (Silvestre Hurtado) made a frame for the
poster. On the day of the Flag Presentation, we presented the new signed
poster to Mr. Short, to thank him for all his dedication and commitment to the
fire service, but also told him using his own home to provide
actual fire training was a little to committed.

The structure fire was determined to have started
from an electrical short. Always looking for a way to stump someone,
when he was told that it looked like it was started by an electrical short,
Mr. Short started "come to think of it, there was two shorts in the
home". The Chief still fully engrossed with the cause of the fire,
bit and asked where, Mr. Short replied " in bed asleep". It is
amazing that a man can loose his home and still retain his sense of
humor. This just goes to show you the true character of Mr. Short,
always trying to put some humor in the situation, a True Fire Fighter.
